I had the pleasure of sharing an evening with Chaudhary sahib a few years ago during his visit to the UK. It turned out then that he and his family had, in 1947, left their ancestral village near Bhoghpur in Punjab, no more than 5 miles from the village that my mother’s family settled in when they made the reverse journey at the same time. That association has always stayed with me. A man of amazing principles, values and commitment to social justice and rights of workers and peasants. I felt inspired. This is of course a loss for Pervez. But for progressives in Pakistan the falling of such a mighty oak is of great consequence. The great Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo, once beautifully described his grandfather’s death as being akin to the burning of a library. It was really sad to hear about the demise of Chaudry Sahib, who we all dearly loved and knew him. Very frank and casual even with youngsters I remember. He was a great man and God has rewarded him with good assets as his Children which incidentally O was not able to meet although being moving closer around. I had the pleasure of sharing an evening with Chaudhary sahib a few years ago during his visit to the UK. It turned out then that he and his family had, in 1947, left their ancestral village near Bhoghpur in Punjab, no more than 5 miles from the village that my mother’s family settled in when they made the reverse journey at the same time. That association has always stayed with me. A man of amazing principles, values and commitment to social justice and rights of workers and peasants. I felt inspired. This is of course a loss for Pervez. But for progressives in Pakistan the falling of such a mighty oak is of great consequence. The great Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo, once beautifully described his grandfather’s death as being akin to the burning of a library. With Chaudhary sahib’s death a great repository of memory and wisdom too has left us. Raj Pal, Birmingham
